Daredevil Glasses: A Look Back
Exploring the Glasses worn by Matt Murdock in Daredevil
The Marvel Comics superhero Daredevil, better known as Matthew Murdock, is renowned for his amazing acrobatic skills and fearless demeanour. Murdock was born and raised in the New York City area of Hell’s Kitchen. As a child, he lost his sight but got enhanced senses, which he now utilises to battle crime and injustice.
Since his debut in Daredevil #1 in 1964, he has grown to be a cherished and recognisable figure in the Marvel universe. Daredevil has battled some of the most infamous villains in the Marvel universe over the course of his career, establishing himself as one of the Marvel universe’s most talented and determined heroes.
Matt Murdock Glasses – What are they?
Wearing spectacles helps Daredevil, better known as Matthew Murdock, hide his identity as a superhero. Due to a radioactive material mishap, Murdock’s other senses have been enhanced to exceptional levels despite his blindness. He fights crime and injustice with his enhanced senses, but in order to live a regular life and keep from standing out, he wears spectacles to hide his blindness. The spectacles also serve as a reminder of the mishap that gave rise to his abilities and the price he paid to become a hero.
In this article we’re going to look into what brand and make of sunglasses are worn by both Ben Affleck, who played Daredevil in the 2003 Movie, along with Charlie Cox who also portrayed Matt Murdock in the Daredevil Netflix adaption. Let’s jump straight in.
Daredevil Netflix Series, 2016
In the Netflix series “Daredevil,” the character Matt Murdock/Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox, wears a custom pair of glasses designed by customer designer Stephanie Maslansky. In an interview with Fashionista.com, she had this to say regarding his iconic red-tinted glasses:
“His sunglasses are a prop. I worked very closely with our amazing prop master Michael Jortner. The glasses were Matt Murdock’s most important accessory and it had to be correct for this current, modern date and it also had to pay homage to what was familiar to fans throughout. I think that Matt tried on… I want to say close to 100 pairs of glasses to figure out which one should work. People had a lot to say about them, including Charlie.”
In series 3 of Daredevil Matt Murdock also wears an alternative pair of glasses that look much different from his iconic red oval frames. These glasses are a pair of Persol PO3152S which can be bought from the Persol website here.
Magnoli Clothiers: These glasses dubbed the ‘Murdock Sunglasses’ are the best replica we could find. They are exactly made using the exact specifications from the series. With UV400 lenses and stainless-steel frames and acetate tips, they are also incredibly well made and will set you back around $85.00.
Lennon Style Replicas: John Lennon, member of the Beatles, famously wore similar shades to that of Matt Murdock. The glasses worn by Lennon were actually made by London eyewear maker Saville Row. Lennon himself wore the ‘Panto 45’ model which is a great pair of glasses if you’re looking for Murdock-inspired eyewear.
Ray-Bans (Round-3447): It’s hard to find a style of glasses not made by Ray-Bans. As one of the most famed eyewear brands in the world, you could do a lot worse than getting your hands on a Pair of Ray-Bans rounds (3447).
Cubitts Lidlington: Something a little different on this list. The Cubitts Lidlington have the same round style as Mudock’s frames but have a thicker rim. Something nice to consider if you’re not looking for an identical replica of Daredevil.
Aside from these brands, these styles of wire-framed oval glasses were very popular in the early 20th century. Because of this, you can often find vintage pairs of glasses in this style on such websites as Etsy and eBay (and at very affordable prices).
Daredevil Film, 2003
In the 2003 film “Daredevil,” the character Daredevil, played by Ben Affleck, wears sunglasses made by the brand Ray-Bans. The specific model of sunglasses that Murdock wears in the film is the Ray Ban RB3119 Olympian. These sunglasses are a unique style that I’d call a hybrid between aviators and Wayfarers. They are still sold by Ray-Bans at the moment and can be bought through their official website.
