Doc Ock Sunglasses

Identifying the Sunglasses worn by Doctor Octopus in Spiderman

Who would have thought that after over 20 years Doc Ock would return to grace our screens in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home? It was a star-studded cast that saw not only the return of all three actors who played Spider-Man but also the majority of the franchise villains including Otto Octavius portrayed by Alfred Molina. One of our most frequent requests on the website is to look into the distinctive pair of oval green sunglasses worn by Doc Ock throughout the film and whether or not we’re able to identify the exact brand of sunglasses he wore. Doc Ock took a slightly different design, in terms of his fashion, throughout Spider-Man: No way home, and it’s his flowing leather jacket and stark green lenses that has everybody talking. In this article, we’re going to take a deep dive into seeing if we can identify these unique green sunglasses worn by Doc Ock and attempt to scope out and identify their brand, and how you can get your hands on a pair.

Doc Ock Sunglasses: Identifying the Brand

I’ve been quite lucky in my investigative work as it seems I’m not the only one who attempted to identify these sunglasses. It seems Doc Ock is a big choice to cosplay and many people have asked the question since the movie aired in 2021. It seems the sunglasses worn by Doc Ock in Spider-Man: No Way Home are a pair of Ray-Ban Round double bridge (RB 3647N) with green lenses and a polished gold frame. These meet the exact specifications and looking at images from the film these seem highly likely to be the pair he wore.

But what about Doc Ock’s sunglasses in the original Spiderman 2 film from 2003? Although they take the same style as the pair featured in No Way Home there are unique differences between the two making them currently unidentified. A Reddit thread from 3 years ago goes into detail regarding these shades from Spiderman 2 with no one coming up with a definitive answer for what brand/model they might be from. I had to take this into my own hands and see what I could find.

Doc Ock Sunglasses: The Search for Spiderman 2 (2004)

With others online already searching for Doc Ock’s Spiderman 2 sunglasses, I had a headstart in understanding the potential frames they could be. One user from that thread said the glasses look like those that have clip-on lenses thanks to the jutted-out metal on the edges. This was further corroborated by others on the thread who said the glasses look extra thick leading them to believe the clip-on lenses theory. Now there’s always a chance that these were simply custom-made frames, made from the move, and are simply a prop conjured up by the production team at the time.

But that didn’t sit right with me. After some searching, I was able to discover a variety of different frames that could be all produced at the time the movie was produced and shot. One more contenter is a pair of Oliver Peoples OP599. These are a good choice as they not only were available in the correct colorway (silver frames) but also have uniquely shaped lenses that are oval but have a tapered bottom that meets at a point. Another strong choice would be the Calvin Klein 345 575 Sunglasses. These again have the correct colorway, but I was unable to identify when the sunglasses were originally produced. Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to find the exact brand Doc Ock wore in Spiderman 2 and without getting in contact with someone who worked on the production team of the film I probably never will.
