Otis Sunglasses: Identifying the Sunglasses worn by Otis Milburn in Sex Education

Netflix’s coming-of-age comedy-drama Sex Education has recently aired its fourth and final season. Starring Asa Butterfield as Otis Milburn, the series follows the love triangle of him and Maeve Wiley (portrayed by Emma Mackey) as they tackle the eves and flows of teenage angst and the pitfalls of young love. Although not readily featured throughout, in Series 2 Episode 7 Otis is casually seen wearing a pair of unique stark yellow sunglasses. This episode follows on from episode 6 where Otis hosts a house party and finds himself drinking far too much. Highly hungover from the previous day, these sunglasses featured throughout the episode are also seen being worn by Mimi Keene.

But the big question on our minds was what brand of sunglasses was Otis wearing in this episode and can we go about identifying them. In this article, we’re going to take a deep dive into attempting to identify the potential brand of these sunglasses so you can grab yourself a pair. We’ll also be looking at close alternatives, if we can’t find the exact pairs, so you can truly replicate Otis’s look whether that be for personal style or cosplay. Let’s just straight in.

Otis Sunglasses: Where the Search Begins

Since these sunglasses were featured so little in the series, we only had a few featured images to take and use when looking for the exact brand in question. The biggest advantage we have is the glasses’ unique lens shape and the obvious unique colorway that is rarely seen in sunglasses style. The first thing we did was attempt to identify the sunglasses of these sunglasses. They seem to be a reimaged style of the classic Wayfarer sunglasses. Wayfarer’s are considered a classic style of frames first developed by Ray-Ban in the 1950s. 

Since then they steadily grew in popularity throughout the 70s and 80s reaching peak fame when they featured in such films as the Blues Brothers (1980) and Risky Business (1983). To this day, they are still one of the most popular and sort-after styles of sunglasses and have many variations, including but not limited to, the ones worn by Otis in Sex Education. The only other factor that is unique to these pairs of sunglasses is their transparent yellow color.

Otis Sunglasses: Identifying the Brand

It was very difficult to find these sunglasses as there were a surprisingly large number of sunglasses that fit the same style and color as the pair worn by Otis. Luckily we have the internet on our side and after at least an hour of plowing through various Twitter posts and Reddit threads, it became increasingly likely that the exact pair of sunglasses had been found. At first, I thought these might be a pair of sunglasses from Ace and Tate – The Men’s Chris Sunglasses. These are nearly identical in style but have one clear difference. The quality. The Ace and Tate pair have a shine that isn’t seen unless quality acetate has been used. Just by looking at the photos from the episode it was clear to me that Otis’ pair were neither good quality nor made from Acetate.

It was confirmed in multiple different Reddit threads that the exact brand of sunglasses worn by Otis was from an unknown brand called AJ Morgan – The Old Coggers. At first, I couldn’t find any images of these sunglasses as the link directing me to AJ Morgan’s official website was dead. That being said, I was able to find these sunglasses both on the Wayback Machine and through ASOS who also sold them at a time. Thanks to the internet for helping us identify these frames. Unfortunately, I can’t find any place online that still sells these sunglasses. They seem to have been discontinued sometime in 2021 and doubt they’ll be making a come-back any time soon.

Otis Sunglasses: Alternatives & Recommendations

So we’ve found the right pair of shades but they’re no longer available to purchase – sod’s law right? That being said, there are many other alternatives available to purchase online that both take the look, feel, and style of the pair seen in Sex Education. We’ve explored the web and found a few different alternatives that we think might be a great alternative to Otis’.

Ace & Tate Chris Sunglasses: I’ve previously talked about these sunglasses as these were my first choice for being the pair of Sex Education. Unfortunately, they didn’t quite meet the exact criteria but are still a great alternative if you’re looking for a more high-quality pair of Otis-inspired sunglasses. These are fantastic quality, far exceeding the actual pair of sunglasses worn in the series, so they are a great pick for people with the right budget. They can be found for a price tag of around $150.00.
